Aeration For Ponds

Aeration is the term used to describe the process of adding oxygen to a pond or body of water. Although oxygen can be added to the pond via a waterfall or fountainhead, often the most efficient way to provide maximum pond aeration is by using a compressor / air pump, along with tubing and diffusers to introduce a constant flow of air bubbles to the bottom of the pond. As these bubbles rise, they pull water them from the bottom of the pond to the surface where most oxygen exchange occurs. This process is called sub-surface aeration.

Why Aerate Your Pond?

  • An aerator or aeration system adds valuable oxygen to a pond. Warmer water holds less oxygen, and oxygen levels can become low in a pond during the hot summer months, especially if it heavily stocked with koi or other pond fish. An aeration system will help maximize the oxygen levels in your pond.
  • Higher oxygen levels increase the number of natural beneficial bacteria in a pond that break down fish waste and organic debris in the pond. This leads to healthier fish, cleaner water and less less maintenance in the pond.
  • An aeration system provides a backup in case your pond pump ever fails. In a koi pond, oxygen levels can drop fairly quickly if there is no circulation. An aeration system will give you peace of mind knowing your fish will have enough oxygen if your pump fails.
  • Aerators also provide an effective way to keep an opening in the ice during the winter. It is important to maintain a hole in the ice to allow toxic gases to escape form the pond as well as adding oxygen. Aerators are also more energy efficient than using a water pump to keep an opening in the ice, saving you money all winter.
  • Aeration saves the energy costs of running a waterfall 24/7. A properly sized aerator can aerate a pond effectively on its own, allowing you to turn your waterfall pump on only when you are there to enjoy it. This can save you hundreds of dollars each year.
