We consider “Clear Water Plants’ to be pond plants that are extremely effective at out-competing algae for the nutrients in the water. These plants are generally fast growing with high metabolic rates and have extensive root systems to absorb nutrients, making them very effective at removing nitrates and phosphates from the pond.

Koi love watermelon! Feed small pieces sparingly at first to let them get used to it. Then put a wedge with the rind in the pond so it will float. The fish will chase it around the pond eating it until there is nothing left but rind.

One of the most significant advantages of using Kaldnes or similar filter media in a moving bed filter is its self-cleaning property. As the media moves within the filter, it continuously rubs against other media pieces. This abrasion helps to slough off excess biofilm, preventing the media from becoming clogged and maintaining optimal filtration efficiency.

Utsurimono (Utsuri) koi are 2-colour koi. The Shiro Utsuri (black & white) is the most popular followed by the Hi Utsuri (red & black) and Ki Utsuri (yellow & black). Utsuri are black fish with either red white or yellow makings.

Great Blue Herons are typically solitary birds, so placing a lifelike heron decoy at eh edge of your pond often deters them from visiting your pond and eating your fish. If you have a heron that lives near your pond, moving your decoy around from time helps to maintain illusion.
