If you have goldfish or koi in your pond, it is imperative to maintain an opening in the ice to allow for necessary gas exchange. Pond De-icers ensure proper gas exchange by allowing oxygen into, and carbon dioxide out of the pond, helping keep fish alive during the winter. In extreme conditions or gardening zones above USDA zone 5 or lower, we recommend the de-icer be used in conjunction with an Aquascape pond aerator or solids handling pump such as an Aquaforce 1000 Solids Handling Pump.
