Pond Cleanup & Algae Removal – Fesserton

Pond Cleanup & Algae Removal

Pond Specifications

This striking pond is the focal point of this property located in Fesserton. The beautiful tiered steps with granite fieldstone boulder walls and steps create a truly unique look and make accessing the pond much easier on what would otherwise be a very steep slope.

This stream fed pond is about 1/4 acre in size, measuring approximately 150′ (46 m) long and 90′ (27 m) wide. The maximum depth of the pond is approximately 6′.  There are several mature deciduous trees around along the shoreline of the pond.

Client Concerns

You can tell from the pictures that the owner takes great pride in maintaining the pond, however with the dry,  hot weather this past summer the amount of inflowing water dropped dramatically, the water temperature rose higher than usual and the weed and algae growth took off .

The client was mainly concerned with excessive Chara algae and a few other submerged weeds growing in the pond making it look unsightly. The Chara also caused the floating fountain’s intake and nozzle to clog frequent creating a maintenance headache.

Cattails and other weeds were also beginning to overtake the shoreline where the inflowing water entered the pond.

Pond Cleaning & Weed Removal

Below are some pictures before and after the pond cleaning process. We hand dug out the cattails and other unwanted plants that were growing along the shore near the incoming flow of water. We also shaped and defined the shoreline edge in this area to provide a neater looking appearance.  Using weed rakes and cutters, we also removed the submerged Chara algae,  filamentous algae and other weeds from the deeper areas of the pond.

Before Pond Cleaning

Below you can see cattails and other plants that were overtaking the shallow area of the pond near the inflowing water. However, the main issue in this pond is the copious amounts of Chara algae growing up from the bottom, reaching the surface of the pond creating a real eyesore.

After Pond Cleaning

After a couple days working on this pond we were able to remove a majority of the Chara algae, other submerged weeds and marginal Cattails. The pond looked great, the floating fountain no longer clogged and the homeowners were happy!

Not only does the pond look great, removing the algae will also set the pond up for less maintenance and weed growth next year. If the Chara was not removed, it would die over the winter, sink to the bottom, begin to decay and become a food source for next seasons algae or weed growth.
