Heaters / De-icers are a great way to keep a
hole open in the ice through the winter months.
Even in winter, underneath a closed
sheet of ice, the garden pond stays biologically active. Decaying vegetation and
other organic matter decompose and release toxic gases which can build up in the
water. These gases cannot escape from the pond if it has a frozen sheet of ice
cover it. Fish often die of toxic poisoning from these gasses. In addition, the
sheet of ice eliminates basically smothers the pond and the oxygen levels in the
water can become dangerously low causing fish to die.
A hole in the ice allows oxygen
into the pond and toxic gasses out which are the most important factors in
keeping your fish alive over winter. We carry 3 very energy efficient floating heaters designed
and 1 ice vent for koi and goldfish ponds.
